Greetings from the Singapore Kindness Movement! The Friend of Singa (FOS) Award is back and we would like to invite your school to join us for another exciting year of FOS Competition. Last year, we saw the participation of many schools that were new to the programme. We are glad that 25 new schools, including 3 new Special Education schools have come onboard SKM’s school programmes, joining the 130 primary and secondary schools that had been enthusiastic participants in this competition.
Background on Friend of Singa
The annual “National Courtesy Award – Friend of Singa” programme started in 1990. The award seeks to encourage students who have gone the extra mile in extending a helping hand to others or displaying outstanding kind behaviours and inspiring acts of kindness.
Participating schools are invited to nominate up to eight students for this award. These students will be honoured as FOS Ambassadors upon completing a kindness project together. SKM hopes that by giving the students such recognition, it will encourage their peers to emulate their fine example.
The theme for FOS 2013 is “There’s always time to make someone’s day”. Participating schools will have to attend a 1/2-day interactive workshop to equip themselves with skills such as public speaking, relationship management, critical and inventive thinking, etc. Participants can expect to sweat it out in cooperative games such as tennis madness, 4 way hula-hoop pass, i accuse and many others!
This year SKM is collaborating with NKF, whereby all participating schools will be given a 8 x 8 inch canvas for them to create an art depicting kindness. All of the canvases will then be collected to form a huge “canvas-tiled” mural. These arts will then be forwarded to NKF for them to hang it at all of their 25 dialysis centres. We hope that these artworks created by the students will brighten up the patient’s day.
